The Grievers were creatures that lived inside and on the outskirts of the Maze and came out mainly after dark (but this is not always the case, as they have sometimes been known to come out in the daytime). Its purpose is to attack and kill any Gladers who venture into the Maze.

Description

Griever Sting

Griever sting on Ben

It is described as being a bulbous, dark creature, with many appendages such as spikes, shears, and rods. It seems to move in a forward roll. A Griever can "sting" Gladers, or prick them, which causes extreme pain for up to days or weeks. Stung Gladers who take the Grief Serum usually regain some of their memories during the painful "Changing." If a Glader does not take the serum, they die.

Grievers make whirring and clicking sounds when they move. The machinery inside of them often causes the reflectance of light, as described by Thomas. Grievers have stung four major characters in The Maze Runner: Alby, Ben, Gally, and Thomas.

Grievers appear to be easily tricked, as seen when Thomas and Minho tricked the Grievers into going over the Cliff. It is unknown if the Grievers intended to go into the Griever Hole. They are assumed to "charge" in oblong cell-like cages seen in WICKED headquarters and at the end of The Scorch Trials.

In The Fever Code, Doctor Paige says that Grievers have a mutated version of the Flare that can be healed with the Grief Serum. Grievers also appear when Minho is being told off for sneaking out at night. Thomas (and the others who were involved in sneaking out from the WICKED complex) are forced to sit down and watch Minho being tortured by the Grievers through CCTV. Thomas tried to struggle away, when he was watching Minho, but he was forced to watch it by Randall and two other members of WICKED. When Randall had decided that Minho had had enough, he tried to get the others to 'turn off' the Griever. However, nobody seemed to hear him so he tried again to get them to stop it before it could sting Minho. Finally, Randall was heard, and the Griever was turned off just before Minho was stung. The memory of that incident traumatised Minho for the rest of his time in WICKED before entering the maze. It is later revealed that Minho went through this multiple times (once for each person who was involved in sneaking out) so they could all see the consequences of sneaking out.

Film

In the The Maze Runner, the Grievers resembled gigantic spiders with cybernetic limbs. Their sting causes symptoms like being uncontrollably aggressive, dark veins being visible. It does not become clear whether it also brings back some fragments of memory. In the film, Ben gets stung by a Griever and subsequently goes through the Changing. Unlike in the Book, this means the symptoms of a Griever sting, not the Grief Serum, like being uncontrollably aggressive, small bits of memory coming back. Grief Serum is unknown, though Teresa finds two syringes with unknown content in her pocket. One is used on Alby after he was stung by a Griever, healing his infection. It is confirmed later on that the Grievers use a mutated Flare virus that can be cured with the serum. The remaining Grievers are either deactivated, crushed by the walls, or killed by the Gladers once the maze was shut down.

Grievers are seen again in the Scorch Trials and the Death Cure as hallucinations. In the Scorch Trials, Thomas hallucinates a Griever as well as several Cranks in a house party after getting drunk. In the Death Cure, Minho is seen running from Grievers as WCKD conducts tests on him.
