A Griever is a creature that lives in the Maze and comes out after dark. It is described as being a bulbous, dark creature, with many appendages such as spikes, shears and rods. The Griever can "sting" Gladers, which causes them extreme pain and a sort of sickness that they may not live through. Two Gladers had been stung by Grievers when'Thomas arrived: Alby' and Ben, but Gally has also been stung by one before.The day Thomas arrived in the Glade he heard Ben screaming, and went to the Homestead to investigate. In the brief glance Thomas got, he saw Ben writhing in agony with his veins protruding a sickly green and his skin discolored. When Alby got stung by a Griever, Minho saves him by carrying him back to the Glade from the Maze. Eventually Thomas gets stung by one on purpose to get his memories back.
